Cosmic Arches - Bixby Creek Bridge Under the Stars

The Bixby Creek Bridge, a renowned concrete arch along California’s Highway 1, offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and has become one of the most photographed bridges in the United States since its completion in 1932. Its dramatic coastal setting, combined with the rugged cliffs and ocean below, makes it a favorite spot for photographers and travelers alike.

On a trip from San Francisco back to Los Angeles via the scenic Highway 1, we made a stop at the breathtaking Bixby Creek Bridge. After some exploration, we discovered a perfect vantage point on a small hill next to the bridge, accessed by a hidden trail. There, we set up the camera for a five-hour shoot. Instead of capturing a single moment, we stacked multiple images to create mesmerizing star trails that illustrate Earth’s rotation, with Polaris—the North Star—at the center of the scene. While waiting for the long exposure shots, we enjoyed a beautiful sunset over the Pacific and passed the time watching a TV show in the car. The passing cars added a dynamic element with their light trails, illuminating the bridge and enhancing the final image.
