Three Moments of Totality (Total Solar Eclipse 2026)

On August 12, 2026, I travelled to Spain with friends to witness the total solar eclipse of 2026. After months of planning, we finally experienced one of the most spectacular astronomical events imaginable. Seeing the Moon completely cover the Sun was an incredibly exciting and unforgettable experience.

This image shows three stages of the eclipse: the Diamond Ring shortly before totality, the Sun during totality, and the Diamond Ring immediately after totality. The Diamond Ring marks the brief transition into and out of totality, when the last and first rays of sunlight shine through valleys along the Moon's limb. During totality, the solar photosphere is completely obscured and the Sun's faint corona becomes visible around the dark lunar disk. The image therefore combines the two dramatic Diamond Ring moments with the delicate structure of the solar corona during totality.

The photographs were taken without a solar filter during the brief period around totality, when the bright photosphere is completely covered by the Moon. The sequence illustrates how dramatically the appearance of the Sun changes within just a few seconds as the eclipse moves into and out of totality.
