The Solar Corona (Total Solar Eclipse 2026)
On August 12, 2026, I travelled to Spain with friends to experience and photograph the total solar eclipse. For a few precious minutes, the Moon completely covered the bright solar surface, revealing the Sun's normally invisible outer atmosphere.
This image shows the solar corona during totality, extending far beyond the dark silhouette of the Moon. The delicate structures and streamers of the corona follow the Sun's magnetic field and reach millions of kilometres into space. Along the edge of the Moon, subtle prominences and the reddish chromosphere can also be seen.
Unlike the bright photosphere, the corona is faint enough to become visible to the naked eye during a total solar eclipse. Its intricate structure changes with the Sun's magnetic activity, making every total eclipse a unique opportunity to observe and photograph it.
