The Chromosphere (Total Solar Eclipse 2026)
On August 12, 2026, I travelled to Spain with friends to witness and photograph the total solar eclipse of 2026. During the brief moments around totality, the Moon revealed details of the Sun that are normally hidden from view.
This image captures the solar chromosphere, the thin layer of the Sun's atmosphere located just above the photosphere. During the fleeting transition into or out of totality, the chromosphere becomes visible as a delicate reddish-pink layer around the edge of the Moon. Small prominences can also be seen extending from the solar limb.
The chromosphere is normally overwhelmed by the intense brightness of the solar photosphere. Only during the extremely short period around totality does the Moon block the photosphere sufficiently for this fascinating layer of the Sun's atmosphere to become visible.
