Starlit Road at Lombo do Mouro
Madeira, a Portuguese gem in the Atlantic Ocean, is famous for its rugged cliffs, vibrant greenery, and varied terrain. While its coastline and panoramic views draw visitors throughout the year, the island also stands out as a prime spot for astrophotography, with exceptionally clear night skies that showcase the Milky Way in all its splendor.
On our Madeira trip in July 2025, we visited an incredible viewpoint and aimed to capture the Milky Way rising behind the elegant curve of the mountain road. When we arrived later in the day, we discovered the road was closed to traffic, which meant losing the chance for authentic car light trails that would have added a unique touch to the image. After photographing the foreground and the night sky, we came up with the idea to mimic a car by turning on a headlamp and running down the road to create light trails. It was a bit tricky, and we had to take several shots before getting it just right, but I’m absolutely thrilled with the final result.
