From Ancient Roots to Distant Stars - Madeiras Trees under the Night Sky
Madeira, the Portuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean, is not only known for its lush landscapes and dramatic cliffs, but also for its exceptional stargazing conditions. Thanks to low light pollution in many rural areas and a mild, stable climate, the island offers clear skies for much of the year.
In July 2025, Laura and I set off on a 10-day adventure to Madeira, aiming to explore the island and capture its night sky. One of our main goals was to recreate a photograph similar to Stefan Lieberman’s iconic shot—a striking tree set against a mountain panorama with the Milky Way arching overhead. Although the weather wasn’t ideal, we made our way to Pico Ruivo after sunset in search of the perfect spot. Finding a suitable tree proved challenging, especially since the one Stefan had used had unfortunately fallen. Still, the idea of capturing something new in the same spirit was exciting. After some searching, we discovered a beautiful tree, photographed its silhouette in the soft light of blue hour, and then captured the night sky just minutes later.
