Fanal Forest: The Tree That Touches the Stars
Located in the Atlantic, Madeira is a Portuguese treasure known for dramatic cliffs, lush landscapes, and diverse terrain. Its scenic coastlines and breathtaking vistas attract travelers year-round, but the island also shines as an astrophotography destination, boasting crystal-clear night skies that reveal the Milky Way in stunning detail.
During our Madeira trip in July 2025, we also explored the amazing Fanal Forest. Most of the time, the forest is shrouded in dense fog, giving it a truly unique atmosphere. Of course, that’s not ideal for astrophotography, so I was thrilled when we spontaneously visited at night and found ourselves under clear skies. I took the opportunity to photograph as many striking trees as I could. It turned into quite an adventure, as the forest is home to many cows—so one has to carefully navigate around them and, more importantly, avoid the cow droppings. In the end, I’m very happy with the results.
